How to Choose the Right Bar Fridge — The Only Guide You'll Need

17 Mar 2026|7 min read

Whether you're kitting out a home bar, upgrading your man cave, or outfitting a commercial venue, choosing the right bar fridge can feel overwhelming. With hundreds of models across different sizes, door types, and features, how do you narrow it down?

This guide cuts through the noise. We'll walk you through the five decisions that actually matter — size, door type, installation, features, and budget — so you end up with a fridge that fits your space, suits your lifestyle, and keeps your drinks at the perfect temperature for years.

1. What Size Bar Fridge Do You Need?

Size is the first filter. Bar fridges range from compact 26-litre countertop units to 825-litre commercial behemoths. Here's how to think about it:

Mini (26–70 litres) — Holds 20–80 cans. Perfect for bedrooms, offices, gaming rooms, and as a secondary fridge. The Schmick HUS-SC50AB (50L) is our most popular mini — glass door, lockable, and quiet enough for a bedroom.

Standard (100–200 litres) — The sweet spot for most home bars. Holds 80–200 cans or a mix of bottles and cans. The Schmick JC165B (165L) is our best-selling bar fridge overall — dual zone for beer and wine, fits under a standard bench, and has a heated glass door to prevent condensation.

Tall Upright (250–400 litres) — Serious capacity for entertaining. The Schmick HUS-SC372B (370L) is the workhorse of this category — a full-height upright with black glass door that holds 300+ cans.

Commercial (400–825 litres) — Built for venues, events, and anyone who takes their drinks seriously. The Schmick HUS-SC700W (737L) is a full commercial unit with glass door and LED lighting — our fifth best-selling model.

Quick rule of thumb: Allow roughly 1 litre per can you want to store. A 70-litre fridge holds about 60–80 standard 375ml cans, depending on shelf configuration.

2. Glass Door or Solid Door?

This is partly aesthetic and partly practical.

Glass door fridges let you see your drinks without opening the door, which reduces cold air loss and looks significantly better in a bar setting. The LED-lit interior turns your fridge into a display piece. Most of our best-sellers are glass door models.

Solid door fridges are typically cheaper, slightly more energy efficient, and better at maintaining temperature during extended power outages. They're practical for garages and utility spaces where looks don't matter.

Heated glass is the premium option. A thin heating element built into the glass prevents condensation from forming on the surface — essential if your fridge is in a humid environment like a pool area, tropical climate, or busy commercial bar.

Our recommendation: Glass door for any space where the fridge will be seen. The visual impact is worth the small price premium, and modern triple-glazed glass is well insulated.

3. Where Will It Go? (Installation Type)

This decision determines which models will actually work in your space.

Freestanding — Needs clearance on all sides (typically 50mm+) for airflow. Place it anywhere with a power point. Simplest option.

Built-in / Under-bench — Must be a front-venting model. Front-venting fridges exhaust warm air through the front grille, so they can be fully enclosed in cabinetry with no rear or side clearance. Most Schmick models are front-venting. If you're building into a kitchen island or bar counter, this is non-negotiable — a rear-venting fridge will overheat in an enclosed space.

Outdoor / Alfresco — Requires an IP-rated, outdoor-specific model with a tropical compressor rated to handle Australian heat (38–43°C ambient). Standard indoor fridges will fail within months if left outside. The Rhino ENVY range is the gold standard for outdoor use — 316 marine-grade stainless steel and IP34 weatherproofing.

Measure first. Before you fall in love with a model, measure your space — width, depth, height, and the doorway you'll need to get it through. We list all dimensions on every product page.

4. Features That Actually Matter

Not all features are created equal. Here are the ones worth paying for:

Front venting — If there's any chance you'll build the fridge into cabinetry now or in the future, get a front-venting model. It's the single most important feature for installation flexibility.

Lockable door — Essential for offices, accommodation, shared spaces, and anywhere kids have access. Most Schmick glass door models include a lock as standard.

Dual zone cooling — Two independently controlled temperature zones in one fridge — cold for beer (0–4°C) and warmer for wine (12–18°C). The Schmick JC165B does this brilliantly in a compact under-bench form factor.

Quiet operation — If the fridge will be in a living area, bedroom, or open-plan space, noise matters. Look for models under 40dB (roughly library volume). Inverter compressors are the quietest because they adjust speed smoothly rather than cycling on and off.

Energy rating — Higher star ratings mean lower running costs. Many Schmick models carry 5–10 star energy ratings. A typical glass door bar fridge costs $40–$80 per year to run.

Self-closing doors — Standard on commercial models, this ensures the door seals properly even when you're distracted. Reduces energy waste and keeps drinks consistently cold.

5. Budget: What Should You Expect to Pay?

Bar fridge pricing reflects size, features, and build quality. Here's the landscape:

Under $500 — Mini fridges (46–70L). Great value for a bedroom, office, or secondary drinks fridge. The Schmick HUS-SC50AB at $417 is the standout — glass door, lockable, tropical rated.

$500–$1,000 — Mid-size fridges (70–165L). This is where most home bar buyers land. Expect glass doors, front venting, and decent capacity.

$1,000–$2,000 — Premium home bar fridges (165–400L). Dual zone cooling, heated glass doors, large capacity. The JC165B ($1,410) and SK246-B-HD ($1,698) are the heroes of this range.

$2,000–$5,000 — Commercial-grade and outdoor models. Rhino ENVY range, 3-door units, matching beer and wine combos. Built for high-volume use and extreme Australian conditions.

$5,000+ — Multi-door commercial systems and matching fridge-freezer combos. These are venue-grade units.

Brands: Who Makes the Best Bar Fridges in Australia?

We stock four commercial-grade brands, each with a specific strength:

Schmick — Our house brand and Australia's largest bar fridge range with over 180 models. Covers every size and use case from 26L minis to 825L commercial units. Known for quiet operation, energy efficiency, and clean design.

Rhino — Premium outdoor and commercial specialist. The ENVY range uses 316 marine-grade stainless steel and is rated to 43°C ambient temperature. If it's going outside in Australian heat, Rhino is the answer.

Dellware — Silent-running specialist. The DW-SC25 uses absorption cooling (no compressor) for near-silent operation — ideal for hotel rooms, bedrooms, and noise-sensitive environments.

IC COLD — Commercial workhorses. Upright glass door fridges and freezers built for high-throughput venues, kitchens, and retail.
